What it is

Alpaca is a chat app for AI language models, built for the GNOME desktop. It runs open models locally through Ollama, so your conversations never leave your computer, and can also connect to online providers when you want a larger model.

You download models from inside the app, then chat with them much as you would with an online assistant: ask questions, attach documents and images, and keep several conversations side by side.

Why it’s here

  • Private. With a local model, nothing you type is sent anywhere.
  • Native. It looks and behaves like the rest of the GNOME desktop.
  • Easy models. Find, download and switch models without touching a terminal.

On CoreDesktop

Alpaca is installed from Flathub. Open it from the app menu. Local models run on your own hardware, so larger ones need plenty of memory and work best with a capable GPU. update keeps Alpaca current with the rest of the Flatpaks.
