What it is
eza lists files, like ls, with clearer output: file types in color, human-readable sizes, icons, Git status for each file, and a built-in tree view. It’s the maintained community fork of the earlier exa project.
Why it’s here
- Easier to read. Colors and icons make file types stand out.
- Git-aware. Long listings can show which files are modified or new.
- Trees built in. No separate tool needed to see a directory’s structure.
On CoreDesktop
eza is installed from pacman, and CoreDesktop’s shell setup makes it the default for listing files. All of these list directories first and show icons where the terminal supports them:
ls # eza
ll # long listing with sizes
la # long listing including hidden files
lt # two-level tree with Git status
Type command ls if you need the original. update keeps eza current with the pacman packages.
