What it is
Firefox is the web browser made by Mozilla, a nonprofit. Unlike most browsers today it isn’t built on Chromium: it runs on Mozilla’s own Gecko engine, which keeps one real alternative to Google’s engine alive on the web.
It blocks many trackers by default with Enhanced Tracking Protection, syncs bookmarks, passwords and tabs through an optional Mozilla account, and has a large catalog of add-ons, including uBlock Origin.
Why it’s here
- A second engine. When a site misbehaves in a Chromium browser, Firefox is the quickest way to tell whether it’s the site or the browser.
- Privacy built in. Tracker blocking and container tabs keep sites from following you around.
- Add-ons that go further. Firefox still supports the full-strength versions of content blockers and other extensions.
On CoreDesktop
CoreDesktop installs Firefox as a Flatpak from Flathub. Open it from the app grid. Helium is CoreDesktop’s default browser; to make Firefox the default instead, pick it in Settings › Apps › Default Apps.
The sandboxed AI agents can’t read your Firefox profile. update keeps Firefox current along with your other Flatpaks.
