What it is

Ghostty is a terminal emulator: the window where you type commands. It draws text on the GPU so scrolling and large outputs stay smooth, and it uses native GTK on Linux, so its tabs, splits and menus look like the rest of GNOME. It works with sensible defaults and needs no configuration file to get started.

Why it’s here

  • Fast. GPU rendering keeps it responsive with long logs and full-screen terminal apps.
  • Native. It follows GNOME’s look and behaves like a desktop app, not a port.
  • Modern terminal features. Splits, tabs, ligatures and inline images work out of the box.

On CoreDesktop

Ghostty is installed from pacman. Open it from the app grid or type ghostty. When CoreDesktop’s update notification asks you to run an update, it opens a terminal to run update in; if GNOME’s own terminal isn’t available it uses Ghostty.

update keeps Ghostty current along with the rest of the pacman packages.
