What it is
GNOME Disks shows every drive in your computer, internal or plugged in, and what’s on it. It formats and partitions drives, sets up encryption, mounts and unmounts partitions, and changes how they’re mounted at boot. It also reads a drive’s SMART health data, benchmarks its speed, and creates or restores disk images.
Why it’s here
- Prepare a drive. Format a USB stick or external disk, encrypted if you like, in a couple of clicks.
- Check a drive’s health. SMART data warns you before a disk fails.
- Image a whole disk. Save a drive to a file, or write one back.
On CoreDesktop
GNOME Disks is installed from pacman as one of CoreDesktop’s maintenance tools. Open it from the app menu as Disks, or run gnome-disks. update keeps it current with the rest of the Arch packages.
