What it is

impala is a text-based interface for Wi-Fi. It lists nearby networks, connects to them (including WPA Enterprise and hidden networks), and can share a network’s details as a QR code, all from the keyboard. It works with iwd, the wireless daemon from Intel, rather than NetworkManager.

Why it’s here

  • Wi-Fi without a desktop. Useful on a console or when GNOME isn’t running.
  • Clear and quick. Networks, signal strength and connection state on one screen.

On CoreDesktop

impala is installed from pacman. It needs the iwd service running, and its authors recommend disabling NetworkManager while you use it to avoid conflicts. CoreDesktop manages Wi-Fi with NetworkManager, so for everyday use, Settings › Wi-Fi or nmtui is the simpler choice. update keeps impala current with the pacman packages.
