What it is

mdns-tui-browser is a terminal app that lists the services devices on your local network advertise over mDNS (also called Bonjour or Zeroconf): printers, SSH servers, media players, smart home devices and so on, with their host names, addresses and ports.

Why it’s here

  • Find devices by name. See what’s on your LAN without knowing IP addresses.
  • Check mDNS works. Confirm your machines are announcing themselves.

On CoreDesktop

mdns-tui-browser is installed from the AUR. CoreDesktop sets up mDNS so machines on your LAN can find each other: it enables avahi-daemon, allows mDNS (5353/udp) through the firewall, and advertises this machine’s SSH server, so you can reach it as <hostname>.local. When systemd-resolved is enabled, the installer also runs fixmdns.sh, which adds nss-mdns to /etc/nsswitch.conf ahead of systemd-resolved so .local names resolve.

Type mdns-tui-browser to see what’s announcing itself. update keeps it current with the AUR packages.
