What it is
Obsidian is a note-taking app built on plain Markdown files in a folder on your computer, which it calls a vault. You link notes to each other with [[double brackets]], and Obsidian shows backlinks and a graph of how your notes connect. A large library of community plugins and themes extends it. The app is free for personal use and closed source; your notes stay ordinary files you can open with anything.
Why it’s here
- Your notes are just files. A vault is a folder of Markdown, so it works with Git, backups and any other editor.
- Linked thinking. Links and backlinks turn a pile of notes into a personal wiki.
- Extensible. Plugins add tasks, calendars, diagrams and more.
On CoreDesktop
CoreDesktop installs Obsidian as a Flatpak from Flathub. Open it from the app grid and create a vault or open an existing folder. update keeps it current along with your other Flatpaks.
