What it is
pipx installs Python applications, the kind you run as commands, into separate virtual environments and puts their commands in ~/.local/bin. Each app gets its own copy of its dependencies, so apps can’t break each other or the system’s Python.
Why it’s here
- Safe installs. Python apps from PyPI without touching the system Python.
- One command per app.
pipx install, pipx upgradeandpipx uninstall. - Try before you install.
pipx runruns an app once without keeping it.
On CoreDesktop
pipx is installed from pacman, and CoreDesktop uses it to install terrahour and gext, the command-line tool that installs its GNOME extensions. update upgrades the pipx apps CoreDesktop installs, and when Arch moves to a new Python version, which breaks pipx environments, it rebuilds all of them. Apps you install yourself are upgraded by you:
pipx upgrade-all
