What it is
uv is a Python package installer and project manager written in Rust by Astral. It does the jobs of pip, virtualenv, pipx and pip-tools with one command, much faster: it creates environments, resolves and locks dependencies, installs Python versions and runs tools.
Why it’s here
- Fast. Installs and dependency resolution take a fraction of the time pip needs.
- Projects made simple.
uv init,uv addanduv runmanage a project’s environment and lock file for you. - Run tools without installing them.
uvx ruff checkruns a tool in a throwaway environment.
On CoreDesktop
uv is installed from pacman. CoreDesktop also needs it for upgrades: pipx apps installed with pipx’s uv backend, as Hermes Agent installs them, need uv to upgrade. update keeps uv current with the rest of the pacman packages.
